Its common advice that timing the market is difficult. Then why is it so common to buy a stock near the top?

I quit trading and now just buy and hold after losing my whole account multiple times over 10 years or so. Even that has been rough for me. If I look back over the years, inversing myself actually seems like it would have been successful. I sold stocks and crypto that I held for long periods right before huge 10x runs many times. With crypto occasionally much bigger then 10x. I bought many positions within weeks or days of the top that came crashing down. I've thought certain plays were never going anywhere and those ended up being huge. It really feels like 95% of my trades were losers. How is that possible? Shouldnt it be closer to 50/50 if I don't know anything. Also I don't follow people like Jim Cramer but I do wonder if similar market propaganda is part of the reason.

To be fair I actually did try inversing myself twice. I shorted stocks where I was about to go long just to see if that would work but it didn't.
