Question about public companies going private.

I’ve tried to Google for the answer, but I’m not finding one.

So, Twitter. Twitter stopped trading the same day the announcement was made that it would be going private, and hasn’t traded since… even though it won’t actually be delisted until November 8.

What the hell happened to any open short positions in Twitter? If it stopped trading that very day, how could they have been closed?
