Can someone explain the inverted yield curve?

The 1 year treasury is yielding higher than the 10 year treasury.

I know this is supposed to be a recessionary sign, and anytime there’s an inversion like this usually a crash follows.

But why does this happen in the first place? If people are expecting a crash, wouldn’t they load up on short-term bonds?
