Using Alternative Data in Investment Thesis?

Hey guys, I am a recent graduate and new to investing. I would say I have a fairly diversified investment portfolio at this moment, putting some money into index funds, some into big tech giants, as well as a bit in crypto (just in case).

I usually take advice from stock and investment accounts online, but lately with the markets moving so shakily, I've been losing a decent amount per month following these plays. I've decided that I would much rather put in the work myself and try to make better gains, as opposed to losing money based off someone else's input.

So, I was curious as to how some of you guys typically do stock research? I was reading through articles on some bigger hedge funds in the US and how they do their research and kept seeing them using alternative data, which is when you pull information from non-traditional, untapped data sources to get some sort of market edge.

If large investment firms are using these alternative data sources when finding opportunities, why can’t people like us use them too? With that being said, I'm curious if anyone knows of any online tools for web data, or if anyone has experience using alternative data in their analysis. Any advice helps!
