Gold vs. SPY — Is it time to exchange?

Over the past five years, gold has been steadily rising in price ($1800 per oz. currently).

If you theoretically had 10 ounces of gold and an investment timeline of 40 years, would it make sense to sell the metal and reinvest in the market, given that gold is hovering at all time highs and the market is steadily sinking? If not now, then maybe within the next 6 months/a year?

With such a lengthy time horizon, it seems inefficient to keep gold, justifying it as a hedge. What might you do if you had gold on hand and long investment outlook—hold steady or sell and use the funds to enter the market? I appreciate any input you might have!
