Question on long term vs. short term buying and selling S&P 500

My wife and I have invested in the S&P. Every time there's a downturn my wife gets mad that we didn't sell everything when it at a high point so we could then buy them back when they're at a low.

To me this sounds good in theory but since it's hard to predict the future I'm of the belief that this is way harder to do than she makes it seem. And the books I've read seem to corroborate this. I haven't been great at explaining to her why. Or maybe I'm just wrong? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance.
