Hi all. I’m a Canadian citizen, but non-resident, having lived in Hong Kong for more than 10 years now and paying Hong Kong taxes only.
So now I’m interested in investing in US stocks. I know I have to pay withholding taxes for dividend yields. My only concern is, would I have to pay Canadian taxes for my capital gains? As I’m not in the Canadian tax system currently, I’m afraid somehow getting into US stocks would automatically make me a Canadian resident again and having to pay Canadian taxes for my US stock capital gains.
