Is there an effect of index selling and bear markets on singular stocks?

Is it common that a stock would usually perform well, but is getting dragged down because it's part of an index that is sold heavily? E.g. company XY has excellent news and is expected to be very successful in the near future, but its stock gets sold because it is part of the Nasdaq, which gets sold a lot at the moment? Does this happen, or is this an irrelevant fear?
