Why do companies provide disappointing guidance?

I’m trying to understand the reason, quite often companies meet or even beat earnings but if they provide disappointing guidance stocks usually plummet, this is especially true for growth stocks.

But do they have to provide the guidance? Tim Apple if I remember it correctly during covid times wouldn’t provide guidance just quote uncertain times. Which might have less of a negative effect than disappointing guidance.
