Google is reported to be negotiating with the Indian government to join ONDC, an open e-commerce network in India

Google is in talks with the Indian government to seek to integrate its shopping service with ONDC, India's open e-commerce network.

The Indian government launched the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) late last month in an attempt to end the dominance of Amazon and Walmart in the fast-growing Indian e-commerce market. The Indian government estimates the country’s e-commerce market will be worth more than $55 billion in 2021 and will grow to $350 billion by the end of 2029.

ONDC's current partners include Indian financial technology company Paytm, among others. The ONDC program aims to join 30 million sellers and 10 million online merchants and reach at least 100 cities and towns by August.

A Google spokesman declined to comment on whether the company was in talks with the Indian government. “We remain committed to helping SMEs make deeper use of digital technology and enable payments through Google Pay,” the spokesperson said.
