Like many retail investors, I have significant losses this year, both realized and unrealized. I will have plenty of carry-over loss for many years to come (since I can only deduct $3K/yr on it). I am trying to hold more losses through to next year instead of realizing all this year.
But for the rest of the year, I am planning to sell out of a position before earnings, then rebuy after. That way I can avoid the uncertainty of earnings (which has been horrendous this year), and still continue to carry the loss as UNREALIZED due to the wash sale rule.
My question is, can I do this indefinitely? Does the wash sale rule 30 day period reset each time I sell and rebuy a stock within that period? Thanks in advance.
