40yr old Start

Good day all,
As the title says I'm a 40yr old beginner when it comes to stock. The past few months I've been reading and better understating what stocks are. To give a background. Most of my work life I spent working retail management, 15 yrs to be exact. If you don't know, retail management is a young single persons game. A few years ago, my wife & I have had our first kid. The crazy hours made my life hectic, so I made the decision to leave. I left with 55k in my 401k and went to help my wife grow her business.
Needles to say she doesn't have a 401k, but we have an amazing home life now. We have a nice size emergency fund and we make about 175k/year. While I'm excited about investing, some of the readings & videos I've watched make it seem like the only way to make your money work for you is to invest thousands of dollars.
ETF's, from what I've read, seem like the way to go.
Should I just buy a share every time I get paid??
What do you guys suggested? Any info/advice is helpful.
